A freak lightning storm rolls into Saltpoint on the last day of school. When the wind bends toward Mike McNulty and only him, he starts to wonder if something extraordinary — or something dangerous — has just found him.
Mike slips out past midnight and discovers the harbor lit by something that has no business glowing. His older neighbor Mrs. Calloway knows more than she lets on.
A dense fog rolls in on a perfectly clear day and refuses to lift. Inside it, Mike hears a voice calling his full name — all three syllables — in a tone that is not quite human.
A low tide exposes a section of the Saltpoint coast that old-timers swear has never been above water. Buried there: three iron rings and a door that leads somewhere the maps don't show.
